On June 9th as a culmination of the There Is Power series, we will be celebrating Pentecost Sunday with a baptism service and celebration during our Sunday morning service.

We felt the need to provide the answers to a lot of the frequently asked questions pertaining to this service, the process we will be using, and baptism in general.

What is baptism?

Baptism is an important step that shows publicly that we are putting our trust in Jesus for salvation. We learn that the purpose of baptism is remit our sins (Acts 2:38). We use Jesus’ baptism in Luke 3:21-23 as our example. When we baptize, we immerse people under the water to symbolize Jesus' death and burial and then are raised out of the water as Jesus was raised from the dead. We believe in baptism in Jesus’ Name as illustrated in Acts 10:48 and Acts 19:1-5. We believe that water baptism is a public declaration of three things: you are following Jesus Christ, you are beginning a new and changed life in Christ, and you are part of a brand new family.

Why should I be baptized?

As Christians, we are baptized, because we are commanded to do so by Jesus Himself in Matthew 28:19-20. Through this step, we are baptizing for the remission of our sins and turning away from our past to a new life of trusting and believing in Jesus as our Savior (Acts 2:38-39).

When is the best time to be baptized?

Once you have decided to follow Jesus, baptism is the next step in your walk with Him. Anyone who is committing their to Jesus and following Him is ready to be baptized (Acts 8:12).

Why do we baptize by immersing in water?

Baptisms in the Bible were done by immersion in water, and Jesus was baptized this way by being immersed in water and raised out of it in Matthew 3:16. Being immersed in water represents our death to our old way of life in sin, and being raised out of the water is symbolic of our new life in Jesus and his victory over the grave (Romans 6:3-5).

I was baptized as a baby, should I be baptized as an adult?

If you were baptized as a baby, your parents wanted to see you live a life of following Jesus which is fantastic, but we invite you to be baptized by immersion to make this life of faith your own personal choice. Even if you have been following Jesus for a number of years in your life but never been baptized, we invite you to take this important step with us.

If you have never been baptized in Jesus’ Name by immersion, we feel that it is important to take this important step and follow the ways that the disciples conducted baptisms as we see in Acts 2:38, Acts 4:12, Acts 10:48, and Acts 19:1-5.

Do you baptize children?

We do baptize children with consent from a parent or guardian. No child will be baptized without the consent of an adult.

We do ask that all children being baptized fully understand what baptism symbolizes and want to make that personal public declaration.

Once I sign up to be baptized, what happens next?

Once you are signed up, we invite you to attend our Baptism Sunday service. After the message, our Pastor will extend an invitation for all who want to make the decision to be baptized.

We will have a registration booth set up which has your information as well as your “I HAVE DECIDED” T-shirt to wear for your baptism.

You will change and be led to an information station which will go over our entire baptism process with you and answer any questions that you may have.

From there, you will be lead into the sanctuary to be baptized by one of our baptism chaplains.

Should I be re-baptized if I was baptized by a different church?

Your baptism should have signified you becoming a follower of Jesus, beginning a changed life, and uniting with a new family. If your baptism did not reflect this change of life, then you should be baptized again.

Do I have to be a member of Livingway to be baptized?

You do not have to be a member of Livingway to get baptized at our Baptism Service. We will baptize anyone who wishes to make the decision to go public with their relationship with God.

Who will baptize me?

We have prayer and baptism chaplains who will baptize all adults.

Our Livingway Children’s Pastor will baptize all children in a smaller baptistery.
